Game Boy Color: Custom Motherboard

This project is in a very early stage of development.
There is no guarantee that it will be published/finished/commercialized.

This is a fully customized motherboard for Game Boy Color. The first test board, the image of which you can see below, is simply the basic electronics required for the Game Boy Color to function, plus the functionalities of the Game Boy Color: USB-C Charging Kit PRO. To refresh our memory, these functionalities are:

• Li-Ion battery charger by USB-C.
• Safe charge and play.
• Power converter.
• Audio amplifier for the speaker.

The idea is not to settle for just that; in fact, if I don’t progress beyond that, the product won’t be released. The plan is to add many other modules/functionalities to incorporate them into a single board. Possible features I have in mind:

• Enhanced battery status indicator.
• RGB lights on each button.
• Volume wheel replaced by multipurpose navigation switch/wheel.
• IPS screen connector for brightness, color palette and OSD menu control.
• Digital volume control.
• Tactile buttons like those on the Game Boy Advance SP (Optional).
• Bluetooth audio output.
• RP2040 microcontroller to manage those functionalities.
• Reflash firmware to the RP2040 via USB-C and and flash button in the battery compartment.
